Who doesn’t love playing with jigsaw puzzles at home?
This classic toy gives us plenty of entertainment, provides some mental workout, and helps to divert our attention from stuff we want to forget about.
Due to the current pandemic which forced people to be stuck indoors, the demand for puzzles surged significantly in the past two years. In fact, sales of puzzles went up by 300% in March 2020 as compared to the previous year.
There are certainly many companies to choose from when buying jigsaw puzzles in the US such as Eurographics and Clementoni. We wanted to know which puzzle brand is the most popular in each state. To find that out, we utilized the monthly search volumes from Google since this data is publicly available. A keyword was counted for a brand if it simply contains the company name.
The information was then plotted using a US map where each brand is represented by a unique color. This helps to better visualize the data and identify the trends.
Please note the research performed was quite extensive as it involved over 70 various puzzle brands.
Most Popular Puzzle Brands by State

There were a total of 4 puzzle brands that are each the most popular in at least one state.
For the majority of states in the US (70%), Bits and Pieces was hands down the top puzzle brand.
Ravensburger appeared to be popular mostly in the West region including Alaska and Hawaii. On the other hand, White Mountain brand was the most favored only in the furthest North East which includes the states of New Hampshire (company’s home state), Maine, Massachusetts, and Rode Island.
One interesting puzzle brand is Dowdle which had the edge over all other companies when it comes to its own home state only (Utah).
Two additional brands that made it to the top three in any state are Buffalo and Springbok.
