Lego bricks are quite popular and loved among children (not to mention adults). But they’re really expensive as compared to other building toys. That’s why as a parent, you may want to find ways to save money on them.
The price of Lego sets is mostly influenced by the number of pieces. So, you get more bang for your buck by buying the sets that have the cheapest cost per piece. That way, you will pay the least amount of money for the maximum number of Lego pieces possible.
To calculate that value, you simply take the set price and divide it by the number of pieces. But still, how would you know if that cost per piece is indeed cheap?
Well, it’s important to have an idea about the current market prices per Lego piece including the minimum, maximum and average. Ultimately, we found all this information through researching product data that’s available on Amazon.
Price of One Lego Piece
Based on Amazon product research, the average price of one Lego piece came to be about $0.11 (11 cents). And the majority of Lego sets have a price between $0.06-0.19 per piece. Anything 6 cents or lower is a great deal that you don’t want to miss while 19+ cents is too expensive.
The average price of one Lego piece is about $0.11 (or 11 cents).
For a 200-piece set, that translates to a price range between $12 and $40 with the average being $22.
The lowest price for a Lego piece was $0.03, and the maximum was $1.67 which is pretty high. We noticed though that most of the very expensive sets (per piece) have extra-large pieces, which naturally jacks up the price.
With that said, the cheapest price for a Lego set ever is about $10 (based on our research). This means that even the sets that are small (e.g. have 20 to 40 pieces) will be normally priced at a minimum of around $10. The reason for this is probably because of the production costs including transportation, mold, and packaging.
The minimum price of a Lego set is around $10 no matter how small it is.
For the above reason and based on the average piece price, we don’t recommend buying a Lego set that’s smaller than around 90 pieces (unless it’s for a baby).
By the way, the number of pieces per Lego set can reach up to 5000+ pieces.
Example on Using Lego Price Per Piece when Shopping
Suppose we have these Lego sets that are sold on Amazon:
Item Price | # Pieces | Price Per Piece | |
Lego set A | $24 | 185 | $0.13 |
Lego set B | $20 | 168 | $0.12 |
Lego set C | $30 | 192 | $0.16 |
Lego set D | $20 | 148 | $0.14 |
Lego set E | $32 | 140 | $0.23 |
As you can see, set B is the cheapest one to purchase based on the piece price of 12 cents.
Notice that set E has a price that’s at the very high end (over 20 cents per piece).
Price of Lego by Weight
We wanted to know Lego price based on the set weight, just for fun. The average price of Lego by weight is about $28/lb, ranging mostly between $20-37.
It’s also worth noting that the vast majority of Lego sets on the market weigh around 0.2 to 3 lbs.
Research Methodology on Lego Prices
We chose to research Lego data on Amazon simply because they consistently carry the highest number of Lego sets anywhere online (including Walmart and Target).
Product data of 400+ Lego sets were collected and analyzed. Please note this includes only products that are sold by Amazon themselves rather than 3rd parties. That ensured there wouldn’t be any duplicates and the prices would be the cheapest.
We found the shortest price range where at least 70% of the product samples fall. This helped in omitting the outliers and using more representative data. Then, we used those data points to calculate the average price per Lego piece. The same procedure was applied for finding Lego price by weight.
Conclusion
This is how to figure out how to get more value for your money while shopping for Lego.
As mentioned, the average price of one Lego piece is about 11 cents.
You ultimately want to aim for the cheapest price per Lego piece, preferably $0.11 and lower but anything under $0.14 would still be good. And try to buy only sets that have 100 pieces or more if you can.
A good Lego price per piece is 14 cents and less.
Here is the maximum price to aim for based on the number of pieces for the Lego set:
Number of Pieces | Good Set Price |
100 | < $14 |
150 | < $21 |
200 | < $28 |
300 | < $42 |
500 | < $70 |
700 | < $98 |
